The White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds has undergone a 65,000 sq ft expansion to include an 11 screen Cineworld cinema including new IMAX technology, multiple restaurants and an extension of both the current Primark and Debenham stores. A variety of attractive public realm features have also been created in the outdoor area so that seasonal events such as Christmas markets and summer pop-ups can provide further entertainment and footfall for the centre.
Building started in November 2016 and was completed in July 2017. An official launch event in July was attended by the client, Land Securities , the architects employed on the project - The Harris Partnership, the main contractor - Morgan Sindall along with many other contractors, Leeds City Council and the White Rose Shopping Centre's management team.
The £13.7 million design and build contract, awarded to Morgan Sindall by Land Securities, was delivered by Morgan Sindall's major contracts team from its regional office in the Hunslet area of Leeds. Working closely with the architects from The Harris Partnership to ensure the build reflected the architect and clients' vision, Morgan Sindall worked with numerous subcontractors, with Roofdec being commissioned to build the roof and cladding.
Jon Barnes Junior, associate director of Roofdec commented, "The White Rose Centre is a project we're supremely proud of. It's certainly an impressive expansion and we've enjoyed the challenges we've had to face on site. As with any major project, the challenges were numerous but surmountable. The site team had to contend with working directly in front of the main entrance and needed to complete as much work as possible outside of the shopping centre's extended opening hours to ensure minimum disruption to retailers and customers. We worked with different rainscreen applications which were all unique curved facias with purpose-made anodised panels in various colours. The effect is very striking.
Another learning curve for Roofdec was the logistics and acoustics of the cinema. The cinema has a net internal floor area of 44,369sq ft and features the latest IMAX technology. The plans included the installation of specialist padding around the steel work to allow for optimum acoustics.
Combined with the White Rose Office Park, the White Rose Shopping Centre is an enormous employment zone just outside of Leeds city centre and the new expansion has created an additional 1,000 jobs with 350 new full-time and part-time jobs to the shopping centre. With the new expansion, White Rose is the ultimate day-out destination and represents a new Yorkshire flagship for the retail and leisure brands located there and the architects and contractors involved in the build.
