The Construction Playbook

Government guidance on sourcing and contracting public works projects and programmes

Written by Andrew Stolworthy, Director of Product and Market Development in SFS Group Fastening Technology Ltd.

The Cabinet Office launched The Construction Playbook1 at the end of last year which provides 'Government guidance on sourcing and contracting public works projects and programmes'. It seeks to build on previous documents such as 'Construction 2025' and National Infrastructure Strategy 2020, transforming the UK construction industry by leveraging the £37 billion purchasing power of social infrastructure projects in 2021 alone to support investment in developments coming from Government and Industry alike.

It also provides the guidance and methodologies to aide improvements in 3 key priorities - Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Building Safety and Sustainable Construction by taking a whole life approach.

What is also pleasing to see, but unsurprising, is the continued recognition of the role Modern Methods of Construction, Digital tools and early engagement of the supply chain can play in achieving the goals.

The Platform Program led by the Construction Innovation Hub2 has continued into 2021 by finalising the 'voice of the customer' research. These 5 Government departments will comply with the Playbook and their requirements have been published recently in the 'Defining the Need' document.

Our next piece will start to look at this in more detail however SFS alongside the rest of the industry partners continues the exciting work of developing this platform approach.
